L.E. Modesitt, Jr. and Stephen Baxter

Time for a quick career update. If you don’t care about what I’m working on right now, just skip this post and move on with your day.

Audiobooks are currently my gold mine, and Tantor is the source. Roughly two months ago, I recorded the first two titles in L.E. Modesitt, Jr’s Corean Chronicles, an eight book fantasy series, and the first of those set a new record for my longest audiobook yet at a total running time of 20 hours, 44 minutes. As I was finishing up book #2, Tantor asked me to narrate a sci-fi novel that was “relatively high profile,” Proxima written by NY Times Best Selling Author Stephen Baxter, who is perhaps best known for his collaboration on The Long Earth series which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett. Somewhere in there I squeezed in a recording session at what has to be the coolest studio I’ve ever been to, 740 Sound, for a commercial for ecoATM, a service that allows you to trade old cell phones for hard cash. They had a full service breakfast bar, complete with chef. And within a week of completing work on Proxima, I was asked to record the forthcoming sequel, Ultima, which I just wrapped up last week. I don’t have a total run time on it yet, but it’s going to be the new record holder, somewhere around 22 hours by my estimation.

In the midst of production on Ultima, Tantor informed me they’d secured the rights to produce the remaining six novels of the Corean Chronicles, too. So I start production on Scepters when I get home from Thanksgiving travels, and I’ve already locked in dates for Alector’s Choice and Cadmian’s Choice. With books 6 through 8 likely going into production in immediate succession, and each title averaging roughly 20 hours running time, I suspect I’ll be booked up between now and April. Job security is a nice change for a little while, but I have to be careful not to allow cabin fever to set in, so I hope to pace myself a little more than I usually do to ensure other avenues of my career, not to mention my social life, don’t fall by the wayside. I’m excited, albeit a bit daunted, about this next chapter of my voice acting adventure, and I hope Tantor doesn’t get sick of me by the time it’s over, because working with them has been an absolute dream.

Oh, and I don’t know if I ever mentioned by way of blog my work on LEGO Friends; I’m in a new movie they’re coming out with as a few minor characters, as well as a couple webisodes as Olivia’s dad and Stephanie’s music teacher. I think that happened two or three months ago; I should probably do a better job of keeping the blog up-to-date. Until next time!
